Krampus performances & parades

Tradition & winter experience

In winter, the region around Berwang offers one of the most impressive traditions in the Alps: the Krampus parades. These special evening shows, often held around 5 December, bring eerie masks, torches, jingling bells and centuries-old folklore to life.

St. Nicholas celebrations in the Austrian Alps

According to tradition, Krampus is Saint Nicholas’s “dark companion” and symbolises the expulsion of evil winter spirits. During a Krampus parade, masked men dressed in fur and horns walk through the villages, making noise with chains and bells and creating impressive scenes.

For young and old?

Masks, horns, torches and fire in a winter evening atmosphere create spectacular moments. Please be aware that this can be frightening for (small) children. Children are allowed to watch, but must be accompanied by an adult. Keep your children at a distance from the Krampus groups. The masks and loud noises can be frightening.
